Smart Image Compression

Visible quality algorithm*

The Fasterize engine automatically determines the appropriate JPEG compression rate to use in order to obtain as small an image file as possible while ensuring that there are no visible artefacts. To achieve this, we calculate a set of images compressed at different compression rates then choose the image whose visible difference compared to the original is below a configured quality threshold (using an algorithm based on characteristics of the human visual system known as MPE or Mean Pixel Error). Image sizes are generally reduced by 30% to 70% with no visible degradation in quality.

Context-dependent images

Today's web sites may be mobile-specific or adhere to responsive design, and users can be viewing your web site on a desktop machine connected through a Wi-Fi hotspot, on a smartphone with Retina screen over 4G or on a tablet over 3G. In other words, user experience is heavily context-dependent, and so are images. Fasterize is currently working on technology to serve connection-dependent images (incorporating features such as adjustments to compression, pixel density and auto-cropping: available mid 2017).

Image Lazyloading and inlining

The Fasterize engine automatically gives priority to loading those images positioned "above the fold". Images further down will be loaded as the user scrolls the page. However, our script is not executed on the first few images on the page to prevent these from holding up script execution and to ensure that they are displayed as quickly as possible.

Image inlining is the technique of encoding small images on the page directly in HTML (Base 64). Instead of issuing an additional request which can cause considerable lag, the browser reads the image directly from the HTML source.

Our engine only applies this conversion to small images. It is better to add a few hundred bytes to the HTML page than to issue a new request, which can take up to 500ms under some circumstances.

Needless to say, lazily loaded images are not inlined! This is one of Fasterize's major strengths: combining different rules to maximum effect while avoiding any measures that may be counter-productive.

Progressive JPEGs

With Progressive JPEGs, a lower quality version of the entire image is displayed as quickly as possible, then further details appear as the image is loaded. The Fasterize engine includes a smart implementation of progressive image rendering which is selectively applied to those images occupying a significant area of the page. Modern browsers will display these images more quickly when encoded as Progressive JPEGs.
